We went to see Julie & Julia. Cute movie. We both really enjoyed it. But that isn't the story. The story was the experience of going to the movie, and watching the movie. Attending the performance of the movie, as it were. We stopped going to movies years ago in the States. People talking. People texting. Dirty theaters. Sticky floors. Who the hell would want to do that. We think it's been at least 10 years since we were in a movie theater together.
So here we are in France. The French consider movies a performance. Art. So it is shown in VO (version original), that means English, baby. They respect the original format of the art. You can still see Casablanca here in English. Or Rocky Horror on weekends.
Anyhow. It was great. They don't talk. They don't text. They actually just sit there and watch the movie. Just like we all used to in the 50's and 60's, before people forgot they weren't sitting on the couch at home.
It was wonderful.
[this is good] I experienced the same in London, years ago. Huge theater, pretty full. It was a bit into the movie before I noticed it. Something felt different. Then I realized, no talking, no munching, no anything. Just sweet silence.
